KDP guide
KDP AI-generated content disclosure
When you publish a new book or edit and republish an existing one, KDP asks whether it contains AI-generated text, images or translations. This is the rule in plain language, checked against KDP help on October 17, 2026.
AI-generated or AI-assisted
AI-generated: declare it
Text, images or translations created by an AI tool. It counts even if you made substantial edits afterward.
AI-assisted: no need
You created the content and used AI to edit, refine, error-check or brainstorm. KDP says you do not need to tell them.
Common cases
Each answer follows the two definitions above.
| What happened | Declare? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AI wrote the text and you reviewed and rewrote parts | Yes | The tool created the content; substantial edits afterward do not change that. |
| You wrote the text and AI fixed errors and improved sentences | No | You created it; AI only edited. That is "AI-assisted". |
| You asked AI for ideas and wrote everything yourself | No | Brainstorming with AI and writing it yourself is also "AI-assisted". |
| The cover or interior images were made by an image generator | Yes | For KDP, AI-generated images include cover, interior images and artwork. |
| The translation of the book was made by AI | Yes | Text, images and translations created by AI are covered by the disclosure. |
This page explains the rule KDP published; it is not legal advice. If in doubt, the decision and responsibility for the answer are yours.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to declare it if I used AI only to edit or brainstorm?+
No. If you created the content and used AI to edit, refine, error-check or improve it, or if you used AI to brainstorm and wrote the text or made the image yourself, KDP calls it "AI-assisted" and says you do not need to tell them.
If AI wrote it and I edited a lot, is it still "AI-generated"?+
Yes. By KDP's definition, if an AI tool created the actual content, it is "AI-generated" even if you applied substantial edits afterward. What counts is who created the first version.
Does the disclosure show to readers on the book page?+
KDP help does not say. The Authors Guild, which asked Amazon to show the information on book pages, reported that Amazon said it will use the data to shape policy and did not agree to display it in its other channels. Check it in your KDP account.
What happens if I answer wrong?+
KDP says it rejects or removes content that does not follow the guidelines, promptly investigates any book reported as non-compliant, and may ask for more information before the book goes on sale.
